Curing – Oxtek Solution Colloidal Silicate Technology
The goal of curing of concrete, is to ultimately achieve the intended hardened properties of concrete that the structure has been designed for. Oxtek Solution’s product range for curing of concrete, utilise the pore-filling ability of colloidal silicate technology, that is proven to be equal to that of water ponding and improve the hardened mechanical properties of concrete. It is readily accepted that increased compressive strength, reduced permeability, reduced cracking, and abrasion resistance enhance the durability of concrete.
X100 Green Concrete Cure Densi Proof and AS3799:1998
As X100 Green Concrete Cure is a penetrative product that provides integral curing and does not form a film or membrane on the surface of the of the concrete, it is not covered or applicable to AS3799:1998 -Liquid Membrane Forming Curing Compounds
X100 Green Concrete Cure (see attached TDS and Product Performance Document) is single pack colloidal silicate proprietary solution spray applied at the time of the concrete pour as an effective curing regime for concrete. With a performance equivalent to that of water pond curing, X100 Green Concrete Cure will significantly reduce the incidence of plastic and dry shrinkage cracking whilst providing a hardened, dust proof concrete.
Selection of Curing Regime and Subsequent Applied Finishes
To provide some further background information, the evolution and adoption of Liquid Membrane Forming Curing Compounds has increased over the years as it is not possible or practical logistically on most construction sites to maintain curing of the concrete by continuous wetting (either by ponding or spray) for up to 7 to 14 days depending on the exposure classification of the concrete which is covered within AS3600Table 4.4.
However, it is well established that Liquid Membrane Forming Curing Compounds are known to affect the bond between concrete and subsequent surface treatments. That is why special care in the choice of a suitable curing regime needs to be exercised in such circumstances. The residue from some products may prevent the adhesion of any applied finishes onto the concrete surface.
The cost to remove these from the surface of the concrete can be costly in both time and money not forgetting, the environmental impact of silica dust generation and noise of the grinding process to remove them. There are UV Degrading curing compounds on the market which will normally require in the region of 56 days exposure to UV to breakdown effectively, which during a typical construction schedule and site practices is unlikely to happen as the concrete will not remain exposed for this required time-period.
Compatibility and Warranty
The introduction of X100 Green Concrete Cure to the concrete at time of pour in lieu of a wet curing or an application of a curing compound will certainly significantly reduce the incidence of plastic shrinkage cracking, providing a hardened, denser and dust proof concrete, compatible with the topically applied floor coverings or coating systems to be installed.
Success in these types of projects is determined by the implementation of Quality Control measures, to ensure that the surface finish of the concrete is acceptable for the application of the product. X100 Green Concrete Cure should be applied by an approved applicator (training and certification can be provided to the nominated contractor) who will ensure the criteria is met for the application at time of pour, undertake the required QC procedure, which in turn will be supported by a Manufacturer’s Warranty (Fit For Purpose) for the project.
Prior to commencement of the project, we will require to liaise with both the builder and the applicator to put in place a Project Specific Specification for the application of X100 Green Concrete Cure, which will include surface preparation guidelines, application procedures, QC / Warranty Request Forms and a copy of the Draft Warranty.
